Tip: Watch Free (Ad-Supported) Movies on YouTube

For studios, a nice easy way to earn some extra money from the ad revenue enabled by YouTube's massive reach. There's not even a complete list of the available movies, which also include the Kevin James vehicle The Zookeeper and the Frankie Muniz spy comedy Agent Cody Banks. A quick search on YouTube shows that the full-length film The Terminator has ten commercial slots that you have to sit through; the presumption is that most of the movies will have roughly the same number of ad breaks. Decent flicks to help you through a Saturday evening, but not the most current of movies. This marks the first time that YouTube has offered free streaming films in exchange for users watching ads. For now though, YouTube and its partners are just testing the waters, with only around 100 films available through the scheme so far.

Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, told Ad Age that free, ad-supported movies presented a good opportunity for both users and advertisers, which makes sense given they'd want their ads on quality video. One is this: You can now watch Rocky on YouTube with little to no hassle. It has been possible to purchase movies from YouTube for some time, but until now there has been no (legal) way to access movies for free.
