As ever with John Lewis adverts, the topic was trending on Twitter since its release.

Elton John has donated a portion of his fee to his charitable trust.

The clip then chronologically goes back through special moments in the John's life, such as that time he performed an epic stadium concert in the 1970s West of the Rockies Tour in North America.

As the end of the ad draws nearer, you'll see a piano-loving schoolboy performing in his assembly hall and peeking over his shoulder to sneak a glance of his mum.

The John Lewis Christmas ad 2018, is probably its strongest one in years.

However, others criticised the advert for not being "Christmassy" enough.

John Lewis is not necessarily known for having an extensive musical instrument range but there are a number of them featured on the website.

"The ad is absolutely fantastic and I've truly loved every minute of being a part of it".

He said: "I think Elton has enjoyed the process of making this tremendously".

A spokesperson from John Lewis told Express.co.uk: "So this Christmas, we will be selling pianos, so you can buy the gift".

"I think, you know, emotionally he is thinking about the journey he's been on as an artist, and that moment, you know, when music came into his life at a very young age when he was encouraged by his mother and his grandmother with his piano".

United Kingdom department store John Lewis has released a tear-jerking Christmas TV advertisement starring Sir Elton John. It has been reported that John received a staggering £5 million ($A8.8 million) to appear, a figure both he and John Lewis have refuted.

The almost two-and-a-half minute ad tells the story of Elton's first piano and how it was "more than just a gift" and helped him become the musical icon he is today.

Sir Elton is now preparing for his final the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.
