S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 averaged just over 2 million total viewers and a 0.5 rating, besting in the demo only Once Upon a Time, Quantico and Ten Days in the Valley among ABC dramas last season.

ABC has handed out a surprise renewal for Agents of SHIELD over six months before the show's next season is set to premiere.

A 13-episode sixth season will air on ABC next summer, and according to Deadline the season after that is "believed" to have the same number of episodes. The upcoming launch of Disney's streaming service, which will include its Marvel and Star Wars titles as well as original shows and movies, has cast a shadow over Marvel-related projects on other platforms, (potentially) leading to the surprising cancellations of Iron Fist and Luke Cage.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, has averaged a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and continues to see success in the worldwide market.

Of season six, she said: 'We don't plan it as a final season. "We're definitely going to make it rewarding either way." . For that reason, showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen wrote the fifth season finale as a series finale.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 returns to ABC in summer 2019.
