Republicans in the House elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy as their new leader Wednesday while Senate leaders kept their posts for the new Congress.

Most of the other leadership races were uncontested and decided on a voice vote.

Rep. Liz Cheney, after being elected as GOP conference chair, said Thursday her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, had some simple advice for her after taking over the seat he'd held more than 30 years ago.

The GOP has gained only one seat in the Senate and has a majority of 51-47 after original projections of gaining as many as four seats. John Barrasso, R-Wyoming, took over from Thune as chair of the Republican conference. Sen. He fended off a challenge from Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

Mr. Jordan of OH said the GOP suffered in the midterm elections because party leaders did not fulfill campaign promises.

"No, I have not interviewed for that job", McCathy, who now serves as the House Majority Leader, said in a "CBS This Morning" interview.

Her opponents, eager for new leadership, are arguing she does not have enough support to pass a full House vote.

Mimi Walters nor Republican candidate Young Kim has produced evidence to back up their charges that Democrats are trying to steal the election.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been elected to another term as GOP leader. The next minority leader will have to decide whether and when the GOP minority might work to find common ground with Democrats and could also come under increased scrutiny from the President as the administration itself goes under a microscope in the new Democratic-controlled House.

Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party.

"I'm just one of the number of people who heard the message of voters loud and clear this year that they want change", said Rep. Kathleen Rice, who is among the nine current lawmakers openly opposing Pelosi's candidacy.

The leadership election comes as incoming freshmen lawmakers are in town for orientation.

The race for minority leader is McCarthy's to lose Wednesday.

Republicans lost the control of the House for the first time in eight years but remains the majority in the Senate during the midterm elections held last week.

Elections Wednesday will also determine party leadership in the Senate.

"I seek to serve as a strong voice in leadership, while bringing new ideas and a fresh face to the team", said Ernst, in a statement posted on Twitter.
