Tom Cruise too short to be Jack Reacher

Lee Child, the novelist who first envisioned the burly ex-military policeman, has admitted Cruise was good as Jack Reacher in a 2011 film and its 2016 sequel, but simply didn't have the physicality fans of his series came to expect. But in the books, Reacher is described as large and physically imposing, and Child notes that Cruise, "for all his talent, didn't have that physicality". That means Cruise is now out after two movies, and a new actor will be taking over the character for the upcoming Jack Reacher TV Reboot.

Child, who has written 46 Reacher novels, praised Cruise's acting chops in an interview with BBC Radio Manchester, but that "Cruise, for all his talent, didn't have that physicality", noting that the the actor's size threw off his some of his core readers who saw the films. He's a really, really nice guy.

While many book-to-screen adaptations have featured some creative casting choices, the height thing is really important to Reacher fans. Reacher is described as 6'5 and blonde in Child's best-selling novels, which is nearly a foot taller than Cruise's modest 5'7 (5'8 on red carpets with the right shoes). The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you're all a little nervous just for that first minute.

"So what I've chose to do is - there won't be any more movies with Tom Cruise".

Child says he's targeting Netflix or another "long-form streaming television" outlet for the Jack Reacher TV series, but as of now, no network is attached.

"I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out and participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series", he tells the BBC. "We're rebooting and starting over and we're going to try and find the flawless guy", Child added. My dad would like Cruise to know that he is still his "boy" that "Cruise is on cruise control", even if he agrees this new direction for Jack Reacher is the right one.
