In addition to some breathtaking action sequences, new Alita: Battle Angel trailer gives us a first glimpse at the deadly sport of Motorball, the popular and hyperviolent gladiatorial contest that was a central part of the manga upon which the Robert Rodriguez film is based. Check out the trailer now below!

In 2015, director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids) inquired about the status of Alita and ended up with Cameron's script in hand and a new job on tap.

One of the best things about this trailer is the use of moments that are instantly recognizable to fans-moments such as Alita smashing the head of Ed Skrein's Zapan through a table, Alita doing a one fingered handstand, and of course her incredible Motorball skills. Also on board: Weta, the famed special-effects house in New Zealand, which was tasked with the film's offbeat challenge of achieving a photo-realistic anime interpretation of Alita's title character and the story's futuristic setting. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. To be fair, Cameron nearly directed this film over a decade ago, as he was weighing it against an original story called Avatar as his next project. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she's grown to love.

Alita: Battle Angel also stars Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun: Maverick), Academy Award victor Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Jackie Earle Haley.

Alita: Battle Angel opens in theaters on February 14, 2019.
