"My friend killed my other friends, and I was just there to see it all happen", Stratton said.

Cody Coffman, 22, was among the dead after a gunman opened fire in a Californian bar.

Mental health specialists talked to him and didn't feel he qualified to be detained under the state's "5150" mental health detention law, Dean said.

The gunman, identified by police as 28-year-old Ian David Long, was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound following the Wednesday night massacre at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, a suburb 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Los Angeles, law enforcement officials said. The bodies of the other victims killed were found at the scene.

More recently he was living in a home where neighbors said they could hear frequent, aggressive shouting between Long and his mother, especially over the previous year.

Further, the officer says a highway patrolman pulled out Helus and waited for a SWAT team as scores of other officers converged on the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks at about 11:20 p.m.

Authorities did not say how the gunman died.

"When he pointed the gun at me, I was out of there", he said.

Miriah Piasecki said two of her best friends were killed.

He first fired on a person working the door, then appeared to shoot at random at people inside, they said.

Erika Sigman, 19, was another witness.

One survivor, Nicholas Champion, said a group of them were at the venue on Wednesday.

Knapp said, "It took a couple of seconds for people to realize what was going on and once that happened it was just utter chaos".

Mr Coffman was one of numerous parents frantically calling their loved ones' phones after news of the shooting broke.

He said he spoke to his son just before he went to the bar Wednesday night.

"Our organization's thoughts and prayers are with the families and the victims that were affected by this awful act that took place in our area", McVay said.

The bar was hosting its weekly "College Country Night" when the incident was reported around 11.20 pm.

Opening fire with a handgun with an illegal, extra-large magazine, Long shot a security guard outside and then went in and took aim at employees and patrons, authorities said.

He praised the murdered officer, a close friend, as a hero, saying: "He went in there to save people and paid the ultimate price".

Helus was a 29-year veteran looking forward to retirement in the next year or two, and leaves behind an adult son in addition to his wife, grieving colleagues said.

The father of a man gunned down in the California bar mass shooting has told of his horror at discovering his son was among the 12 killed.

A SWAT team from the Ventura County Sherrif's Department, arrived within minutes, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other officers to find the bar strewn with bodies, survivors huddling in terror, and others desperately trying to get out. California Lutheran University president Chris Kimball said that he had "heroically saved lives". The university invited the community to gather at the school's chapel.
