Bourke Street stabbing: One dead, man arrested in Melbourne

A knife-wielding man has crashed a vehicle on Melbourne's Bourke Street Mall then set it on fire, allegedly stabbed three shoppers, killing one, before being shot by police.

Mr Hair said two civilians became involved as well as two police, trying to stop the man from his attack.

The suspect has been shot and is alive, police say. See the videos below.

The suspect has been arrested and is in hospital in a critical condition, under police guard.

The knifeman clutched his chest and and fell to the ground where he was quickly arrested on the pavement by two officers and rushed to hospital under police guard.

Videos shared on social media show a man attacking two police officers with an object, before he is subdued by police.

Victoria Police said a bomb response unit had been called to the area and was now making the scene safe. The condition of the surviving pair is unknown.

Photo from the scene showed crowds of people behind police barriers. They are not looking for anyone else.

No further information was available at the time of writing.

Police are urging people to avoid Swanston Street and Bourke Street.

Sarah Werkmeister, a witness, told The Herald Sun: "All I saw was the auto on fire, and the police cuffing someone on the ground". He was then shot by police.

"Police are aware of an incident in the vicinity of Bourke Street", Victoria Police have said in a statement.

Crowds are being told to avoid the Bourke Street area.
