Active shooter at North Carolina school false alarm

No injuries were reported and there is no evidence of an active shooter.

When deputies arrived, they heard the sound of gunshots.

School buses headed for the school were being diverted to a nearby Lowe's grocery parking lot.

"We think it's going to be related to that faulty mechanical equipment", Rowell said.

WRAL reports there was a heavy law enforcement presence at the school, which is located at 245 N. Saint Johns Church Road in Hampstead, when the reports of an active shooter first surfaced.

Pender County schools said via Twitter early Friday that all campuses on the eastern side of the county are on lockdown.

WECT TV reported that a local commission said no active shooter has been identified.

Authorities were alerted around 6:30 a.m., according to ABC11, The News & Observer's media partner.

Topsail High School is about 105 miles southeast of Raleigh.

Two Topsail High School students were arrested in May after allegedly bringing weapons onto campus, including one student who went to school armed with a semi-automatic rifle. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.
