Mr. Link, of course.

This looks much cutesier than anything in Laika's past, but also looks to bring the gorgeous, textured animation style that has become the studio's signature. Exhausted of living a solitary life in the Pacific Northwest, Mr. Link recruits fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost to guide him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La.

As sometimes happens, the United States trailer - also released today - gives a slightly different look at the film.

Zach Galifianakis and Hugh Jackman lend their voices to the tale of an inquisitive primate in the first trailer for the upcoming animated comedy Missing Link. These include Coraline, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and the above-mentioned ParaNorman, all of which received Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature in the year they debuted.

Butler says the wanted to move stop-motion away from the darker themes that the general public associate with the technique.

You can't really go wrong with "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" so right off the bat this trailer is solid, but digging deeper it's fun to see LAIKA traversing a wholly new genre. "I didn't want it to be a Halloween movie or a ghost story". The studio also produced Tim Burton's 2005 film Corpse Bride, developed a dream sequence for 2007's King of California, worked on the television series Slacker Cats, and created stop-motion and claymation footage for A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. So it's a big epic roller coaster ride...

Missing Link is written and directed by Chris Butler, who was an character designer on Coraline, wrote and directed Paranorman, and was a writer and head of story on Kubo. "I think on paper there's no way this movie should have been made in stop-motion, but we did it anyway".

"We basically took a grab bag of everything we've done and tried to push it farther", Butler explained.

Missing Link is in theaters via Annapurna Pictures on April 12, 2019.

The voice cast also includes award-winning actors from all corners of the world, such as Oscar victor Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), Stephen Fry (The Hobbit), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland), David Walliams (Little Britain), Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones), and Ching Valdes-Aran (Nurse Jackie).
