Dead In Rusape Bus Accident

Both the driver and conductor of one of the buses that collided with another in Rusape, killing 47 people are said to have survived and fled from the accident scene.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi was not immediately available for comment but ZBC quoted him in its figures about the accident.

Details were still sketchy Wednesday evening but State broadcaster ZBC reported that police had confirmed as many as 47 people had died on the spot.

Photos from being shared on social media shows bodies on the road with the cars said to have gotten into a head-on collision on either sides of the road.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a message of condolences to families who lost their loved ones following the Rusape bus accident along the Harare-Mutare highway which occurred yesterday.

"We have no idea how many have been injured but it's a very bad situation".

Traffic accidents are common in Zimbabwe, where roads are riddled with potholes due to years of underfunding and neglect, but the highway where the accident occurred had been recently resurfaced.
