Heathrow travel CHAOS - Dozens of flights HALTED due to ‘technical issue’

A runway lighting issue at London's Heathrow Airport has caused delays to a number of early morning flights, the airport said in a statement Wednesday.

"Because Heathrow operates at almost 100 percent capacity, there is no space in the schedule to accommodate a number of delayed flights and as a result some services may need to be cancelled and passengers booked onto alternative flights".

Nearly one in seven flights due to land at Heathrow between 6am and 9am were delayed by more than 15 minutes, according to figures from the aviation data firm FlightStats.

"For the latest information, passengers should check their flight status with their airlines before travelling to the airport".

Britain's largest airport said it was trying to fix the problem, but advised passengers to check with their airline to see if their flights had been affected.

"We apologise for the disruption to your journey".

A spokeswoman for British Airways said: "There was an issue with Heathrow Airport's airfield lighting during the night".

Earlier passengers due to fly into Heathrow had been reporting that they hadn't been allowed to take off.
