Wayne Rooney continued his fine scoring form in MLS as his brace inspired a 3-1 win against New York City to confirm DC United's place in the play-offs.

Before Rooney unexpectedly moved to Washington, DC United were a nothing club going nowhere.

After two wins in their first 14 games, DC United have now gone nine matches unbeaten and won their past five.

Rooney, who has 12 goals for D.C. since joining from Everton in July, had his team in front after eight minutes, side-footing home from close range after Luciano Acosta's mazy run through the visiting defense.

DC were dominant and netted again through Rooney from the penalty spot after a handball in the area, although the veteran star gave the ball away cheaply for a late David Villa consolation goal.

Former Barcelona and Spain striker David Villa pulled a goal back for NY, who have one win in their past nine games.

Rooney's former Manchester United teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic came through for an LA Galaxy team fighting for their playoff lives.

The victory coupled with Real Salt Lake's 3-0 loss to the Portland Timbers put the Galaxy just one point behind Salt Lake for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference with a game in hand.

"Playoff spot secured. Proud of this team!"

That left Kansas City at the top on 59 points with Dallas and Los Angeles FC also in the chase.

Atlanta United still top the MLS after a 2-1 win against Chicago Fire, with New York Red Bulls beating Philadelphia Union 1-0 to remain one point behind.
