The First 5G Phone Might Be a OnePlus

At the Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit 2018 that is being held in Hong Kong, the Chinese mobile maker confirmed that it will launch a 5G smartphone next year. While the OnePlus 6T is set to launch in NY launch on October 29, the company's co-founder Carl Pei has already teased 2019's OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7T. One of these two 5G smartphones could be launched by OnePlus.

That may make OnePlus one of the first to market with a device that's prepared for 5G, but it depends what other manufacturers do in the coming months.

Qualcomm also announced that with help from Ericsson, it has recently made a successful over-the-air call from a smartphone form factor test device - powered by a Snapdragon X50 - over sub-6 GHz bands using 3GPP Rel-15 spec compliant 5G NR.

Pei confirmed the company has been experimenting with 5G technology, and will be ready to introduce a phone ready for 5G connectivity by the end of 2019.

According to Pei, OnePlus' teams kickstarted plans to support 5G back in 2016, and were joined by Qualcomm the following year. If that's the case, then we can expect the OnePlus 7 to be a 5G smartphone, and to arrive in the first half of 2019. Motorola is even playing safer by stuffing Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem into a Moto Mod, but hey, at least all Mod-compatible phones will have the option to upgrade when this comes out early next year.
