He said the show was "great fun", but " time commitment and extensive travel.takes me away from my family and friends more than I'm comfortable with".

And trio were officially unveiled at a photocall on Monday morning on the banks of the River Thames in central London, flanked by a red Aston Martin DSB Superleggera and a blue Porsche 911 GT2RS.

The 26 season of the show, which airs on BBC2 in the United Kingdom and BBC America in the USA, is set to start filming later this year and will run in early 2019, while the 27th season of the show, which will feature the new pair will film in early 2019 for a debut later in the year.

There will be two new hosts of Top Gear.

Take Me Out host McGuinness and the former cricketer Flintoff will take the steering wheel from Matt LeBlanc, who earlier this year announced he was leaving the motoring show after four series.

"This is a thrilling maneuver from the 'Top Gear team, ' and I'm relishing what this trio will deliver", said Patrick Holland, the controller of BBC Two.

Starting with series 27 next Autumn, the new line-up will follow the end of series 26, which still features Matt LeBlanc, who quit unexpectedly five months ago, Harris and friend of CT Rory Reid as lead hosts. Top Gear fans worldwide are a passionate bunch and I consider myself one of them.

As for Chris "Monkey" Harris, the official line is that he's over the moon about his new comedy sidekicks. "Now let's start up this Great British machine and see what it can do".

Reid, who has co-presented for several years, is giving up main hosting duties but will continue to present the sister show "Extra Gear", the BBC said.

"I will forever be a Top Gear fan and I wish the team continued success".

"They're both brilliant, natural entertainers - and their mischief mixed with the most exciting cars on the planet is sure to take the show to the next level". Or is it a sign the Beeb just can't get the mix right since the original lads left?

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome your new Top Gear hosts: Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff! "Chris Harris might have the greater auto skills, but when it comes to the infamous Top Gear challenges, he's going to have to bring his A-game to have the beating of these two".
