Other senior German politicians, including foreign minister Heiko Maas and foreign affairs committee chairman Norbert Röttgen, have also called for a halt in arms sales to Saudi Arabia, citing dissatisfaction with Riyadh's explanation of how Khashoggi died inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Both areas are now being searched for Khashoggi's remains.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Sunday he would reveal the "truth" about the Khashoggi case on Tuesday while Turkish officials vowed to pursue the case after Saudi Arabia's admission of guilt.

Mr. Khashoggi, a US resident who fled Saudi Arabia past year, was an outspoken critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He said: "We are not going to throw our hands in the air and terminate our relationship with Saudi Arabia, not just because of the huge number of British jobs that depend on it but also because if you exert influence over your partners you need to be able to talk to them". After weeks of denying knowledge of his fate, Saudi officials said the prominent journalist was killed in a "rogue operation".

As the investigation into the death of Jamal Khashoggi continues, Turkish police on Monday found a vehicle belonging to the Saudi consulate and bearing diplomatic plates in a private parking lot in Istanbul's Sultangazi district, where it had been parked for several days after the journalist's disappearance.

Several senior members of US President Donald Trump's Republican Party said they believed Prince Mohammed was linked to the killing, and one called for a "collective" Western response if a link is proved.

Hollywood, too, has been reassessing its ties to Saudi Arabia, where the crown prince recently lifted a ban on movie theaters. Trump and some of his backers have been at pains to blunt the condemnation that has been hurled worldwide at the Saudi regime, and in particular, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in whom the USA administration has invested much political capital.

"Only when all European nations are in agreement will this make an impression on Riyadh", he said, speaking on public television.

TRT also published photographs showing Khashoggi entering the consulate wearing what appeared to be a black jacket, light gray short and gray trousers.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin on Sunday that she supports a freeze on arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

The latest account includes details on how 15 Saudis sent to confront Khashoggi had threatened him with being drugged and kidnapped and killed him in a chokehold when he resisted.

"While it might be too early to evaluate the reaction of the worldwide community, these moves might be read as a serious initial signal that the Saudi leadership is course correcting", wrote Ayham Kamel, the head of Mideast and North Africa research at the Eurasia Group.

The images, which were published by CNN on Monday, show the decoy leaving the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by the back door, wearing Mr Khashoggi's clothes, a fake beard, and glasses, in the hours after he was killed.

"That is unacceptable in any government", al-Jubeir said on Sunday. They said the "hypotheses" proposed so far in the Saudi investigation need to be backed by facts to be considered credible.
