'Luke Cage' Cancelled: No Season 3 for Netflix Marvel Series

News of the cancellation comes four months after the superhero action drama from Marvel Television debuted its second season on the streaming service - and just days after Netflix pulled the plug on another Marvel show, "Iron Fist". Now we can add Luke Cage to the casualties.

"Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season", Marvel and Netflix said in a joint statement released to Variety on Friday.

The team-up series The Defenders never received an official cancellation, however some sites reported the Facebook page for that show was recently rebranded by Netflix to a "space to live everything super, sci-fi, the fantastic, and beyond". While season 2 was a bit uneven, it ended with the dearly departed Mariah turning the tables on Luke, deeding him the Harlem's Paradise nightclub.

Despite the return of Daredevil this weekend for its third season, the Hero of Harlem wasn't so lucky.

According to TheWrap, the decision to cancel the show came down to creative differences, and an inability to reach terms on a deal for a third season. "With Marvel and Netflix seemingly in intractable and different sides of the disputes, a harsh cancelation became the only viable exit strategy, it appears".

The move is another surprising one for the companies, given that Luke Cage was, like Iron Fist before it, setting up some very intriguing moves for a third season that, up until today, felt all but guaranteed.

So far there has been no comment from star Mike Colter or show runner Cheo Hodari Coker.
