Wade's code switch would be comparable to that of Jarryd Hayne, who abruptly left the NRL rugby league club Parramatta Eels to join the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL as a running back and kick returner.

A 2013 British & Irish Lion, Wade is generally considered to be the fastest player and deadliest finisher in the Premiership.

Wade is the third highest try-scorer in Premiership history with 82 tries behind Tom Varndell and Mark Cueto and would become the highest profile rugby union player to attempt to make it in the NFL.

Wade has made five appearances for Wasps this season, with his appearance against Gloucester on October 6 looking like his last for the Coventry club. Wade, whose girlfriend is American, spent three weeks in the summer training in New Jersey with an NFL-style footwork coach.

Christian Scotland-Williamson moved from Worcester to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, while a year ago Alex Gray left Yorkshire Carnegie to link up with the Atlanta Falcons. It may however, be offset with the arrival of the All Black centre Malakai Fekitoa, who is now at Toulon but is linked with a move to Wasps.
