Houston Rockets guard James Harden (13) loses the ball under pressure from New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis (23) during the first half of an NBA basketball game Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, in Houston.

As a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, Anthony balked at the notion of coming off the bench and stood by that stance in his exit interview.

When the Houston Rockets signed Carmelo Anthony this summer after his brief but memorable tenure as a member of the Atlanta Hawks, the biggest question was what role he would fill for a team that got the closest to taking out the Warriors of anyone past year.

Many were surprised by the fact Julius Randle wouldn't start in this game, but he's expected to have a heavy workload off the bench. Atlanta released him to clear the way for him to sign with the Rockets.

The 34-year-old forward, who has started every game of his National Basketball Association career, agreed to a deal with Houston in mid-August after he received a buyout from the Hawks. Those numbers are not almost high enough to justify saying Yes, even if I think Houston takes a slightly higher percentage of twos with Mbah a Moute and Ariza gone.

A sixth-man role where Anthony could play a starring role on the team's second unit made since from day one. I thought it was a demotion. Houston was run out of their own building by a visiting New Orleans Pelicans team who ultimately won 131-112.

James Harden led the National Basketball Association in usage last season per CleaningtheGlass.com, at 40.4 percent. D'Antoni doesn't see how Harden could get better.

They took the National Basketball Association by storm last season and many consider them a legitimate threat to dethrone the Golden State Warriors.

"We've got plenty of guys to choose from", D'Antoni said. "We'll be all right". Nobody expects the 33-year old to play all 82 games regular season games, and it's unlikely he'll ever play 70 ever again, but Paul played in more than 16 straight games once last season and that's after averaging less than 32 minutes. "That's real conversations that we have".

Davis also had 16 rebounds and Payton finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Pelicans who led wire-to-wire. With that experience under their belts, they're eager to do even more this season.

"For sure", Harden said. He brought his turnovers down significantly last season, but it helped having Paul on the floor with him. "We might need you to do that tonight, ' I have a clearer understanding of what my role is". However, the Rockets made 19 more three-pointers than the Pelicans.
