Turkish sources have told the Reuters news agency the authorities have an audio recording indicating Khashoggi, a USA resident who wrote columns for the Washington Post, was killed.

"It certainly looks that way to me". Riyadh strongly denies the claim.

Mr Mnuchin announced he would pull out of the summit, following a discussion with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Trump said, however, it was still "a little bit early" to draw definitive conclusions about who may have been behind it.

Saudi Arabia has denied allegations by Turkish officials who have said Khashoggi was killed inside the building and his body removed. "It's bad, bad stuff". "But we'll see what happens", Trump told reporters when asked what would be the consequences of such an unfortunate incident.

After that, "we can make a decision about how the United States should respond to the issues surrounding Mr Khashoggi", Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo stressed that the USA and Saudi Arabia have important links, including working on countering Iran.

A USA government source said that U.S. intelligence agencies are increasingly convinced of the crown prince's culpability in the operation against Khashoggi, which they believe resulted in his death.

The case has prompted global condemnation with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and UK worldwide Trade Secretary Liam Fox pulling out of a key investment conference in Riyadh next week.

Although Pompeo suggested the USA could wait longer for results, an official familiar with his meetings in Riyadh and Ankara said the secretary had been blunt about the need to wrap the probe up quickly.

According to the reports, the assassination squad included agents tied to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a powerful figure in the Saudi royal family and lynchpin in the trend toward ever-tightening relations with the White House.

But one of the key figures in the Saudi-U.S. alliance is receiving particular scrutiny for his role, or lack thereof, in the response: Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.

Investigators have also recovered "many samples" from their searches of the consulate and the consul's residence, the senior officials said, and will attempt to analyse those for traces of the DNA. Investigators tracked the routes and stops of cars that left those two places on October 2, the officials said.

Asked if Khashoggi was dead, he said, "It certainly looks that way".

Police officers searched the forest yesterday and collected footage from cameras located in the area, while officers in Yalova's Termal region are said to have been quite busy for the last three days.

House Democratic Whip Steny H Hoyer said the reported death of Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi officials is appalling, as is the Trump Administration's failure to hold the government of Saudi Arabia accountable for its actions. 3, 2018, it was concerned for the safety of Khashoggi, a columnist for the newspaper, after he apparently went missing after going to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

CCTV pictures show the journalist entering the consulate to get documents so he could marry his Turkish wife - but he was not seen leaving and has not been seen since.
