The Cherokee Nation released a statement in response Monday afternoon.

Gutfeld added that President Trump does not owe Warren the $1 million she said he should donate to a Native American charity. Regardless of the fact that her great-great-great grandmother on her mother's side was Cherokee it doesn't mean that Ms. Warren's ethnicity; the culture that influenced her and contributed to her development as a human being is Native American. Lindsey Graham's quip on Fox News earlier that day about hypothetically taking his own DNA test.

The nation's 573 federally recognized tribes do not have a single standard for determining membership.

Burbank was a member of the appointments committee and part of a subcommittee that investigated all minority prospects for jobs at Penn Law when Warren was being considered for a professorial position.

"I took this test and released the results for anyone who cares to see because I've got nothing to hide".

Warren's test showed her native ancestor appeared in her lineage six to 10 generations back, making her less than 2 percent Native American.

Trump's references to Warren as "fake Pocahontas" are particularly offensive because they show how pop culture has glossed over the treatment of Native Americans, particularly women, said Chelsey Branham, a member of the Chickasaw Nation. Democrats are defending ten such seats this year. "It certainly was offensive to me". The controversy also brings her head-to-head with the sitting president before such a race even begins, boosting her national profile even more.

"I've had 50 people minimum walk up the driveway to shake my hand", he said.

Opinion on Warren was not monolithic.

Indeed, there are sensitive, appropriate ways to talk about potentially having Native American ancestors.

The Washington Post quoted Kim TallBear, a researcher at the University of Alberta, who said Warren's claims were "yet another strike" against tribal sovereignty.

Liberal analyst Chris Cillizza of CNN also chimed in, saying: "If Warren thought that this video and DNA test would shut Trump up, she was dangerously mistaken".

Warren acknowledged identifying herself as a minority in the directory for almost a decade. This made it sound like Warren had less Native American DNA than the average European-American.

'There's a distinction between citizenship and ancestry.

'I used to say, 'I have more Indian blood in me than she does and I have none, ' and I was right, ' Trump continued. "But my family history is my family history".

Native American groups have previously criticized Trump's invocation of "Pocahontas" to refer to the Massachusetts Democrat. "Native communities have faced discrimination, neglect and violence for generations", Warren intoned. "Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong", said the Cherokee Nation secretary of state, Chuck Hoskin Jr. Based on these results, her father's parents would have had to identify her from her 1/512 native heritage.

With the November elections just days away, Roy says he is glad the sign is getting people fired up and politically engaged. It's really actively being a part of that culture.
