Hundreds of people lined up in New York City as rapper Cardi B handed out free winter coats.

"I think she's unbelievable, and I think it's great she's doing this for the less fortunate", one fan told USA media. "I think she's a positive person", said fan Shantel Rodriguez, 28, who was the event with her 7-year-old daughter Alicia.

Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, shot to fame past year after her first single for Atlantic Records, Bodak Yellow, reached number one in the U.S. and was certified platinum.

The Bronx native told New York's WABC-TV on Thursday that she was excited when she learned about the opportunity from a friend to help give out free coats at a public housing community in Gravesend, Brooklyn.

Dozens of kids rushed into the Marlboro Houses community center to snap pictures with Cardi B and grab a leather or fur coat and sneakers.

Cardi B, born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, later got a gift of her own in the form of a symbolic key to the Marlboro Houses.
