Amazon creates 600 technology jobs in Manchester

Amazon said the new Manchester team would work on research and development, including software development and machine learning.

A new corporate office in Manchester, due to open next year, will be located in the Hanover Building in the Northern Quarter.

Additionally, new jobs and office expansion allocated to existing research centres in Edinburgh and Cambridge will house work on products such as Amazon's voice assistant Alexa, its range of Echo smart speakers and Prime Air, a future delivery service to get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using drones.

Doug Gurr, Amazon's United Kingdom country manager, said: "With the United Kingdom taking a leading role in our global innovation, we are delighted to announce plans to create capacity for over 1,000 new highly-skilled roles across the country".

Retail to cloud-computing giant Amazon plans to hire over 1,000 new staff across three sites in the United Kingdom, and will open a new office in Manchester next year.

Amazon has said the United Kingdom will be "taking a leading role in global innovation" as it announced plans to hire 1,000 more technology, research and other skilled workers by next year.
