Trump threatens to close border U.S.-Mexico border

"All Democrats fault for weak laws!"

Trump took things up a notch, falsely accusing Democrats wanting "Open Borders" and leading the "assault on our country" by a "large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS". Trump said that the immigration debate would be a "great midterm issue for Republicans", with November's elections less than one month away.

Writing on Twitter, the president first made a baseless claim that the immigrant caravan was part of a conspiracy by Democrats in coordination with several Central American governments. Believing their chances of entering the USA are greater in numbers, the migrants have been hitching rides and hiking through Guatemala, with the aim of approaching the USA through Mexico.

Trump also suggested that the migrants hoping to enter the US are linked to crime and drugs that he said are "pouring in", and he called on Mexico to stop the "onslaught".

Mr. Trump has warned that the US would cut aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador if those countries don't stop the caravan.

Trump has previously threatened to cut off millions of dollars in aid to Honduras, a plan he reiterated Thursday, saying he was "stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have nearly no control over their population".

Mexico's government says migrants with proper documents can enter and those who don't either have to apply for refugee status or face deportation.

Also Thursday, LifeZette reported the president's threat Wednesday to stop US aid to the Central American nations if they don't do more to prevent their people from seeking to enter America isn't likely to be a sufficient deterrent. Visas were granted to a handful of these migrants.

In 2016, it was estimated that 400,000 migrants pass through Mexico every year. 20,000 of these migrants die or disappear along the way, many of them at the hands of criminal gangs, according to a report by the Mesoamerican Migration Movement.
