Attempting to drive a vehicle through a barricaded low-water crossing also is forbidden. Local authorities warned residents to evacuate promptly on Tuesday due to strong currents threatening homes and businesses in the area. Several other agencies have conducted their own rescues along the Llano and other rivers in the state.

The Llano River flows between the washed out Ranch Road 2900 bridge, October 16, 2018, in Kingsland, Texas.

The Llano River overran the bridge Tuesday morning.

The river at the city of Llano was over 39 feet as of 6:30 a.m. local time and expected to crest around 41 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

A flash flood warning is in effect, and forecasters describe it as a "very risky situation".

Massive floods swept through Central Texas on Tuesday, and rushing waters are expected to rise overnight and into Wednesday morning.

The governor's warning came little more than a week after four people were washed away when the South Llano River, which becomes the Llano River downstream, overran an RV park in Junction. The bodies of three men were recovered and on Tuesday morning, one remained missing.

Residents were evacuated from homes Tuesday in Kingsland and in nearby Marble Falls, which was being overwhelmed by the Colorado River.

Fast-moving water slammed against bridges, causing at least one to crumble under the flow.

The rain also was causing problems in other parts of Texas.

Patricia Sanchez, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, said the transition from fall to winter usually brings elevated levels of rainfall - but nothing compared to the amount of precipitation over the last month.

Kingsland, where the bridge collapsed, sits in Llano County, and is the meeting point between the Llano Rove and Colorado River.

In 24 hours, the river rose to 12 metres, some 10m higher than the day before, and around 5.5 metres above major flood stage. The body of a third person was found Saturday.
