Cruz is now running facing a tough re-election campaign against Democrat Beto O'Rourke.

"Watched the debate last night & Beto O'Rourke, who wants higher taxes and far more regulations, is not in the same league with Ted Cruz & what the great people of Texas stand for & want", the president tweeted. "I'll now take that appreciation, '" she said.

Josh Blank, manager of polling and research for the Texas Politics Project at UT Austin, said there's a good reason for the President getting involved in the Senate race again. And in what was supposed to be safe territory for Republicans this season, President Trump is also set to hold a rally for Cruz in Houston next Monday. "So I think that was probably a conscious decision".

Sen. Cruz's lead in the historically deep red state of Texas lies in the white vote, where he leads O'Rourke by a 2-1 margin, 66-33 percent, according to the poll.

When asked to say something nice about his opponent, O'Rourke focused on Cruz's love for his family, and his genuine ambition to serve and do good by his country. The new spots came the morning after he assailed Cruz as "dishonest" in a debate in San Antonio.

Blank said the campaign and election calendar have entered the final phase.

On Wednesday, O'Rourke began airing new TV ads criticizing Cruz's positions and record.
