A plane carrying first lady Melania Trump unexpectedly turned around shortly after taking off from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday morning.

About 10 minutes after takeoff, some Secret Service officers were seen heading toward the front of the plane.

Reporters traveling with the first lady reported that 15 minutes after the plane took off smoke was spotted in the cabin and filled with a burning smell.

Reporters were brought wet towels and told to hold them over their faces if the smell became too strong.

"Smell and smoke have since dissipated", NBC's Peter Alexander tweeted.

"Everything is fine and everyone is safe", said Stephanie Grisham, press secretary for the first lady.

Trump was headed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she was scheduled to make remarks about neonatal abstinence syndrome.

According to a Health and Human Services spokesperson, Trump will continue her journey once a new plane is ready.

The first lady's intended visit was to be one of stops as she promotes her "Be Best" campaign, which focuses on issues affecting children, including the importance of healthy pregnancies.
