On April Fool's Day, Musk tweeted, "Despite intense efforts to raise money, including a last-ditch mass sale of Easter Eggs, we are sad to report that Tesla has gone completely and totally bankrupt". Shares fell more than 5 percent the following day.

In the earlier tweet, he had mentioned, "Elon was found passed out against a Tesla Model 3, surrounded by "Teslaquilla" bottles, the tracks of dried tears still visible on his cheeks".

Elon Musk confirmed the news in a subsequent tweet, simply saying that "Teslaquila coming soon ..."

Tesla Motors has submitted a trademark application in the U.S. for its own brand of the popular alcohol, termed, amusingly: 'Teslaquila'.

Neither application guarantees the automaker will, in fact, market tequila. But as CNBC points out, Tesla filed it with an "intent to use" which indicates that it has a good faith intention to utilise it in the future.

Tequila is made from fermented and distilled juices from Mexican agave plants.

Well it appears it wasn't a joke, because Elon filed docs saying his company meant to manufacture the booze, ID'ing it as "distilled agave liquor".

Despite a $20 million settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission that includes a provision for more company oversight of his social media use, the billionaire has been making waves on Twitter once again.
