While this series will not be a Gotham prequel (despite Heller and Cannon's involvement), it will revolve around a version of Alfred that is in his 20s, and has already served as a Brisith SAS soldier. Seems like a private security company is the exact sort of place you wouldn't go with to figure that out, but hey, we know he's gonna become a butler by the end of this freaky exploration of Alfred's backstory anyway, so maybe young Pennyworth will learn that for himself soon enough.

Aldridge will star alongside Jack Bannon, who plays Alfred.

"Michael and his colleagues have created the flawless venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the EPIX slate", added Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon.

Bannon previously appeared in The Imitation Game and Ripper Street. Production on the series will begin Monday, October 22, 2018, at Warner Bros.

Pennyworth's Thomas Wayne is described as "a young, fresh-faced billionaire hailing from the East Coast of the United States". Honest, open-faced and witty, he's the kind of person people would never take for a SAS killer. Alfred doesn't know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become, and he doesn't know what to make of himself yet.

The 10-episode, hour-long drama series is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

On the heels of announcing Jack Bannon as a young Alfred, Epix's upcoming Batman prequel Pennyworth has found Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas Wayne. Studios Leavesden in England. In 2019, the network will premiere new series Godfather of Harlem starring Forest Whitaker, Pennyworth, the origin story of Batman's butler Alfred, from DC and Warner Horizon Scripted Television, and Our Lady, LTD starring Sir Ben Kingsley. On left is Roache's Thomas Wayne with Michael Caine's Alfred Pennyworth (plus young Bruce Wayne) in Batman Begins.
