The Duke and Duchess of Sussex received some very Australian baby gifts - a stuffed kangaroo and a pair of tiny ugg boots - during the first official engagement of their first Australian tour.

The Duchess of Sussex is expecting her first child in spring next year, Kensington Palace has said.

Insiders have said Prince Harry is "happier than he has ever been" as he and Meghan prepare to become parents next spring.

As for how far along the expectant royal is, she reportedly had her 12-week scan recently, putting her at the three month mark. It will be her first child with husband Prince Harry.

Many fans had already guessed that Markle was pregnant, considering her subtle changes in wardrobe as of late - but they were excited nonetheless for the newlyweds.

Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, will spend the next 16 days on a nonstop tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga that will take them everywhere from meeting koalas and joeys, to showcasing women's organizations, to cheering on Invictus Games competitors.

Others praised the couple for waiting until after Eugenie and Brooksbank's Royal Wedding to reveal the news.

Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills is in Australia with the couple and said: "This tour was going to be busy enough - I think this is going to bring another exciting focus to it all".

Meghan Markle and her mother, Doria Ragland, arrive at Cliveden House Hotel, in Berkshire, England, on May 18, 2018 to spend the night before her wedding to Prince Harry.

Thomas Markle previously slammed Meghan for ignoring him.

The palace said the couple had sought medical advice and chose to continue with their plans. "We are delighted, it's awesome, and I know that the people who are already excited to see you will just be enthralled by the fact of this wonderful news".

"Your Royal Highnesses, welcome to Australia", said Sir Peter, 'may we on behalf of all Australians congratulate you both on the announcement that you are expecting a baby.

"Looking forward to sharing in the joy during your stay down under".

So the big tour Down Under hasn't even got underway - and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are leading the news bulletins.
