Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi Mi Box S, the latest Android TV Box from Xioami with premium features like 4K and HDR Video playback.

It's Android TV, so you pretty much know what to expect, and it ships with Android TV 8.1 Oreo so you're getting the new interface all the latest features like Google Assistant integration and that incredibly convenient Play Next feature. Running Android 8.1 out the box, this lets you access a "world of content", including Netflix, VUDU, Spotify, YouTube, and SlingTV.

There's a new remote control with this smart TV box. The Mi Box S also offers excellent audio output using Dolby Digital Plus + DTS surround sound. Along with the formal introduction, Xiaomi and Google confirmed the Mi Box S is coming to the United States, and is actually available to pre-order starting today ahead of its scheduled October 19 launch date.

If you already own the Mi Box, there really is no reason to buy the Mi Box S. However, those who don't already own an Android TV box should grab this not only because of the new design and remote but also because it's cheaper than the original.

Powering proceedings is a quad-core CPU, backed up with 2GB of RAM and there's 8GB of storage on board. It will start shipping from November 4 in the US. Interestingly, the remote control accompanying the Mi Box S is where most of the obvious design changes can be found.

Impact: Under normal circumstances the Mi Box S would barley be representative of a next-generation device and would probably be largely ignored by the market. This is the first time we have seen the Mi TV Box S go official considering it is not listed on Xiaomi's official China website.
