Selena Gomez has been admitted to an East Coast mental health facility, TMZ reports. Sources told TMZ that it was an "emotional breakdown".

The website claims she is now being treated with dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) at an East Coast psychiatric facility.

A source confirmed to UsWeekly Selena "is now resting and getting treatment for a series of panic attacks related to ongoing medical issues".

Both of these visits were due to her low white blood cell count, but the outlet said that the second visit to the clinic 'threw Selena into a downward emotional spiral'.

Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend was reportedly released from a local Los Angeles hospital, but was readmitted days later because her blood cell count remained low, sending her into an emotional crisis. After years of rumours about a substance abuse problem, Gomez also did a brief stint at a rehab clinic - though her publicity team blamed it on exhaustion.

Selena reportedly wanted to leave soon after being admitted but doctors said she wasn't ready to be discharged.

"She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point", a source told the magazine.

"She realised she needed to seek additional help for her ongoing emotional issues".

DBT is a cognitive behavioural treatment used to give patients skills to manage painful experiences, according to Psychology Today. In August, her one-time best friend and former Disney co-star Demi Lovato was hospitalized for an alleged heroin overdose.

The "Back to You" singer wrote on Instagram two weeks ago that she was taking a break from social media.

"Just remember, negative comments can hurt anybody's feelings".
