Google Home Hub - Google Assistant With A Display

Now, Google has one. But the Google Home Hub isn't the hub I wanted. You obviously can't transmit video without a camera in the Home Hub, but you can however still see video from users making a video call.

At the time, I thought it a bit of an odd proposition.

With the increasing number of smart displays and smart speakers in homes, parents are getting anxious about the nearly unrestricted access their younger children might have to features and information that may not be ready for yet. That's a plus from a privacy perspective, although Lenovo and JBL do provide a physical camera cover. Google's is a bit smaller though, with a seven-inch display where Lenovo's comes in eight and 10 inches.

Other new camera tricks include a flicker sensor to prevent flickers effects under certain indoor lightning and a new Visual Core chip; Google's proprietary AI photo processor it introduced previous year. There will be a range of retail partners stocking the Chalk (grey) and Charcoal (black) coloured options including JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, The Good Guys, David Jones and Big W; or you can purchase an Aqua (blue) or Sand (pink) coloured model in addition to the Chalk and Charcoal model from the Australian Google Store.

If you watched the livestream you'll already know all the price and availability details for the USA, but what about those of us in the United Kingdom? In fact, if you have the most recent version of the Google Home mobile app, you can see this for yourself because the interface is cohesive between phones, tablets, and the Google Home Hub.

Instead of hiding the controls deep in the Google Home app, a simple swipe down from the top of the screen brings up a dashboard with all your smart devices in a quick-access fashion, allowing you to control your connected stuff easily.

Talking to Wired about the camera, Google's vice president of product management Mario Queiroz said that Google doesn't need a second lens. I love this integration because today I have to tap my phone or ask Google to show my front door in order to see who's ringing my doorbell.

Other smart displays will get these features with a software update. The actual feature-set is nothing new. You'll also get Pixel USB-C earbuds free with each unit, as well as six months of YouTube Music Premium and free unlimited high-res photo storage on Google Photos until 2022. It hasn't officially been announced yet, but it seems that Google has just outed their own product. The idea is to remove what Google calls the "billboard effect" where your eyes are drawn to the brightness of the display in a dim room. The Home Hub screen really doesn't look much larger than a smartphone.
