Gunn had long since apologized for the jokes, and, as such, his firing set off widespread debate over whether it was merited, with members of Guardians' cast going to bat for him (especially Dave Bautista).

Warner Bros has let nary a detail slip about the potential plot and with James Gunn on board to write, whatever was rumoured to be included could go out the window. It's not like they're standing around waiting for his approval.

He was sacked from Guardians 3 in July after old tweets emerged, where he appeared to joke about paedophilia and rape. But when writer/director David Ayer's film arrived some seven months later, in the wake of the dark and divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it left a lot to be desired.

Gunn is also in consideration to direct the sequel to the 2016 movie about super villains forced to work for the US government, according to the report.

Reports say he has already signed on to write the sequel, and possibly direct as well.

Earlier this year, director James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be released in 2020.

"I think it's an incredibly courageous and smart move by the studio", he wrote. "James is the right man for the job!" he tweeted.

Bautista's contract situation with Marvel could prevent him from appearing in any DC movies that Gunn makes for a while. With numerous actors contractually obligated to star in a third film, most of the cast have avoided addressing the situation as to not ruffle feathers, though Bautista regularly expresses his disdain on social media, going to far as to volunteer to join the potential Suicide Squad film. Someone with a good grasp of story and making characters endearing, even if they're reprehensible, is something Gunn has done time and again in his work. After ending his initial run in 1992, modern Suicide Squad creator John Ostrander was brought back to the title in 2007 to revamp the team, not unlike how Gunn is now coming in to revitalize the franchise.
