"There are only 0.58 beds per 100,000 population in Nepal to avail mental health services while hospitals providing mental health services are only available in urban areas", said Dr Basudev Karki, psychiatrist at Mental Hospital in Patan.

It's an annual occasion created by the World Federation for Mental Health, designed to get us all talking about the state of our mental health.

A new survey of adults in the Midlands conducted for PHE also shows almost three quarters (71%) of people in the Midlands report experiencing one or more of low mood, anxiety, stress and trouble sleeping, frequently or occasionally.

The World Federation for Mental Health notes that suicide and substance abuse numbers have been steadily rising, LGBTQ+ youth are battling loneliness and isolation, and young people still aren't getting the support and education they need to deal with mental illness.

On October 10 every year, the world observes the day to draw attention to the importance of mental health.

Launched as part of World Mental Health Day, "Jason McAteer; Through the Storm" takes a powerful look into the world of mental health and challenges the associated stigma of speaking up through personal accounts, both on and off the pitch.

"There is a strong belief that mental illness is something caused by spirits or demon possession", he adds. For many, these can be times of stress and anxiety, and these feelings can lead to serious mental illness if they are not recognised and managed in time.

They explained that the adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of change- moving schools, leaving home, and starting work.

Although African countries have been said to be making progress, much more can be done to build mental resilience from an early age to help prevent mental distress and illness among adolescents and young adults, and to manage recovery, the body said. The focus on mental health should be no different and every year 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem.

"In 2016, a tragic case occurred in South Africa when the Gauteng Department of Health stopped funding a large 2000 bed facility and allowed the dis¬charge of vulnerable people with psychosocial disability into unlicensed community residential facilities, leading to the death of over 140 people", noted the 46-page report which brought together global mental health experts, advocates and mental health users.

"We struggle to talk about it openly or to offer adequate care or resources".
