Walmart also sold the new Chromecast before Google's Pixel 3 event

The third-generation Chromecast is based on an SoC that is 15% faster when compared to the chip that powers the second-gen Chromecast dongle. Best Buy had no problem displaying the brand new media player and selling it to interested customers, even though Google hadn't announced the product. That's only available in the Chromecast Ultra, which didn't get updated today.

After multiple leaks, the Chromecast Generation 3 didn't make it to the stage of the Made by Google event this morning, but it's appeared on the Google Store, though there's no mention of special features or Bluetooth. Walmart just sold the unreleased Chromecast as well, a few days before Google's fall press conference. An update later in the year will allow you to add Chromecast to "speaker groups", meaning you can listen to music from Spotify, YouTube Music (and hopefully other streaming services) in ideal harmony across multiple connected, compatible speakers.

The new Chromecast comes in either Chalk or Charcoal, but really, the device hasn't changed all that much. The new Chromecast is simply in a prettier, more "Made by Google" friendly case.

Well, nevermind our post about Google not announcing the new Chromecast. Now here we are a few weeks later and the newest version of the streaming device is now the real deal.

Google on Tuesday introduced its newest Chromecast dongle for media streaming.
