If you ever wanted to change your PSN Online ID on your PS4 but were frustrated at the lack of ability to do so, there is some good news on the horizon.

Last week we heard from multiple developers that Sony was about to unveil its PSN name-changing service: something Microsoft rolled out many years ago that Sony fans have clamored for.

On October 10, PlayStation announced that changes to your PSN Online ID "is coming", starting with a select group of test users. For those that do get access, you'll be able to do your first change for free.

"The first change is free, and changes after that will cost $9.99". The pricing for Europe will be €9.99/£7.99 for regular PSN members, and €4.99/£3.99 for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

When changing your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID for friend recognition purposes. It will then roll out to everyone worldwide in early 2019. This is a choice users will have to make; once you decide to display your old ID or not, you won't be able to change this.

All PlayStation 4 games published after April 1, 2018 are compatible with PlayStation Network online ID changes, as are a large majority of the most-played PlayStation 4 games released prior to this date. However, some PS4, PS3, and PS Vita games will not be compatible, which could cause problems. During the preview program you can revert back if the errors are so busted that you can't use programs correctly.
