Google reveals the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

There have been so many leaks surrounding Google's latest Pixel phones that today's announcements felt like little more than a formality. The Pixel 3 XL is a flagship phone, though, with flagship pricing.

However, some have insisted a more affordable model of the hardware will be made available that comes with a 7th-generation chip from Intel. They are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and wireless charging is included for the first time in a Pixel phone.

There's 128GB of storage and a fingerprint scanner on the back of both devices.

That first impression will likely fade into the background once you get your hands on this phone, because the texture from that "soft touch" rear imparts a feeling of quality. This may not sound like anything too special, but Google tries to compensate with software gimmickry. And Google's hardware event, scheduled weeks ago, fell awkwardly one day after the company's largest recent data-privacy scandal. Forget about the fact that it can take six months or even longer to get big updates, the phones simply aren't updated with new Android builds after a while.

Verizon touted the camera's functionality, saying that thanks to new AI functionality, it can select the best shot from motion photos.

Beyond the camera, Google is using artificial intelligence to help screen calls. It is super impressive and basically lets you tap on something while looking at the camera and it will give you information about what you are looking at. It's no secret that no one deploys AI to its best use in the camera than Google and that looks to be the case with the Pixel 3 as well. Smart Compose suggests phrases in your emails so that you can draft them faster, on the go.

Google Pixel Slate starts at $599 and will arrive "later this year", according to the tech firm. This year we have two new Assistant features coming to Pixel. Believe it or not, it can make calls for you, too. It will then provide a live transcript of caller's speech and show it on the Pixel's screen. The new Pixel phones are also expected to follow the trend of expanding the phone screen almost to the edges of the device. The company spent plenty of time during its press conference in New York City on Tuesday detailing the many exciting new software features packed into its new phones, but Google obviously didn't have time to cover everything during its 90 minute presentation.

Google also introduced the Pixel Stand, which serves as a wireless charger that turns the Pixel into a smart visual and audio experience that can be controlled by on-screen actions or by using voice commands.

The Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL were revealed yesterday and ZDNet's Jason Cipriani posted his five reasons to pick the Pixel.

Like the Google Home Mini, the speaker base comes with a fabric covering and rounded corners, with a number of color options to best fit with your decor (baby blue, pink, black, and white).

The new phones will be available to pre-order from Thursday 11th October and will go on sale in the United Kingdom on Thursday 1st November.
