Door County officials hope for calmer flu season with vaccine clinics

The dominant viral strain, H3N2, was a particularly severe form of influenza, leading to widespread and serious illness across the country.

After a 2017-18 flu season that many considered the worst in 40 years, Tampa Bay area health officials are warning residents to get vaccinated early. When a flu virus develops into pneumonia, it can result in a child being admitted into the hospital.

Experts say early indications suggest that this year's flu season will be milder, but the memory of last winter should still serve as motivation to get the flu shot this fall.

"The flu shot can lead to some soreness where you have the injection. The flu vaccines used in the national programme also have a good safety record".

Flu season typically peaks between December and February, but significant activity can occur as late as May.
