Osaka faced frustration in the third set as Zhang, cheered on by the Chinese crowd, ran to a 4-1 lead, but Osaka battled back for the win.

Yet Kerber struggled to keep her unforced errors count down, making 36 in the match, and her challenge ended in a final set rout. "I'm not sure how many I hit today, but sometimes previous year I think I was hitting a lot", she said.

Following Simona Halep's first-round withdrawal with injury, second seed Caroline Wozniacki is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament and she booked her quarter-final spot with a tight 7-5 6-4 win over Anett Kontaveit.

Osaka advanced to the final of last week's Pan Pacific tournament in Tokyo before losing to Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-4.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber suffered a shock exit to world No 45 Zhang Shuai at the China Open on Thursday.
