"Iran's leaders sow chaos, death, and destruction", Trump said.

"We will never surrender America's sovereignty to an unaccountable, unelected global bureaucracy", Mr. Trump said.

If the president's approach to North Korea has softened in the previous year, his attitude towards Iran has not. They do not respect their neighbors or borders, or the sovereign rights of nations.

The moment only reinforced Trump's isolation among allies and foes alike, as his nationalistic policies have created rifts with erstwhile partners and cast doubt in some circles about the reliability of American commitments around the world.

"We have pulled out of the Global Compact" on migration, she continued.

But Rouhani, in an interview with NBC News after arriving in NY, saw such an offer as hypocritical.

Earlier in the day, Trump characterized the Iranian government as a cancer on the Middle East.

Iran has accused Mr Trump of waging "psychological warfare" against it. and denies any involvement in terrorism.

The U.S. president also called for restoring democracy in Venezuela.

Trump insisted the global body must recognize America's autonomy.

Tomorrow, Trump will for the first time chair a Security Council meeting on non-proliferation that will focus heavily on Iran, likely triggering a clash with other big powers.

A year ago, Trump used his first United Nations speech to harangue North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warning he was on a "suicide march" if he failed to comply.

President Donald Trump repeatedly says "the world is laughing at us" when bashing his political rivals or ideas that go against his agenda.

"For me what is of importance is that the leaders of the two countries are seeking mutual interests and have a dialogue and take subsequent steps which ultimately can lead to the undoing of the knots that have existed and the difficulties that have existed in the relationships between the two countries in the last four decades", he said. However, Trump noted that much work remains to be done.

"Countries were admitted to the World Trade Organization that violate every single principle on which the organization is based, while the United States and numerous nations played by the rules".

"Missiles and rockets are no longer flying" from North Korea, threatening the region, Trump noted. He gave special thanks to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and also to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jingping.

Trump called his administration's foreign policy one of principled realism.

Trump provides further evidence, if any was needed, that the United States is renouncing USA leadership of a global system of institutions that have aimed to enhance worldwide cooperation on a range of fronts, including trade, human rights, and migration.

Mr Trump used his speech to call for worldwide trade reforms and insist that his main objective as president is to protect American sovereignty.

Trump said the bad policies helped create an $800 billion US trade deficit. His mention of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar all in one breath, was received by stone-faced Saudi officials.

Oil prices are now above $80 a barrel-but OPEC has boosted oil output in recent months.

Trump began his speech to the worldwide body by talking about the "extraordinary progress" made under his administration. He noted that unemployment for African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans had reached historic lows, while stock market values have hit record highs. And Trump's speech served only to reaffirm his ramrod posture.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani addresses the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S., September 25, 2018. "Didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK".

Trump did not apologize for calling on other nations to share more of the costs of U.N. activities and worldwide aid.

One diplomat in the room said that everyone was trying not to roll their eyes, adding that Mr. Trump can not be taken seriously when he makes broad statements about US strength. He also said the US would no longer pay more than 25 percent of the United Nations peacekeeping budget.

As in his first speech before the U.N. General Assembly, Trump placed importance on the idea of sovereignty and rejected the "ideology of globalism".

Trump's speech also underscored that his administration is serious about Washington's retreat as the leading multilateral actor, instead charting a course driven by purely nationalist sentiments.
