UEFA Champions League holders, Real Madrid are interested in signing Ajax star, Frenkie de Jong in the January transfer window.

Real Madrid are serious about beating their La Liga rivals to the Dutch sensation and are willing to hand over an €80 million (£71.8 million) fee for a player they view as Luka Modric's ideal replacement in the near future.

Quizzed on the reported interest from Barca and City, De Jong's representative told De Telegraaf: "I can neither confirm nor deny this".

Ajax director Marc Overmars is delighted at the battle that is breaking out between Europe's elite for De Jong, which will allow the Eredivisie club to extract a huge fee for their most valuable asset. "I send all clubs that contact me over to him".

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Tottenham and Manchester City are claimed to have already been in touch with Overmars to register their interest.

De Jong is an incredibly versatile player who can play either in midfield or defence, though has predominantly lined up in central midfield so far this season.

Since joining Ajax from Willem II for €300,000, De Jong's career has gone from strength to strength, which prompted Ronald Koeman to hand him his competitive debut against Franceearlier this month.

It is unclear how much longer Ajax can realistically keep the 21-year-old in the face of such substantial interest.
