Matthews says National Football League is 'getting soft' after latest controversial penalty

Even Smith wasn't quite sure about the call that came late in the third quarter of Washington's 31-17 victory.

With two first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, Cody Williams of NFL Spin Zone has Green Bay addressing both sides of the ball on the opening day. Matthews broke in alone on Smith, wrapped him and brought him down. "Missed tackles. Missed assignments", said Matthews, who was whistled for the way he sacked Smith late in the third quarter, then complained about the way National Football League games are officiated nowadays. I understand the spirit of the rule. Not Alex Smith, the Redskins quarterback who was sacked by Matthews with about as straightforward a tackle as can be on Sunday. "What can I do differently?"

"That's a football play".

"It felt good to get into 'The 100 Club.' I have a little time off now". In all, the Redskins needed just four plays to jump out to a lead. How can you calculate how much weight a defender puts on a quarterback? "But in my judgment, I ruled that he landed on him with most or all of his body weight there".

"I'm just going to keep playing hard", he said. He was coming full speed off of a block.

In Green Bay's 29-29 tie against the Minnesota Vikings last week, a potentially win-sealing interception for the Packers was wiped out by a roughing call on Matthews when he hit Kirk Cousins. "I think they're getting soft", he told the media, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. "The only thing hard about this league is the fines they levy down on guys like me that play the game hard", Matthews said. "Maybe now pass rushers, guys getting after the quarterback, you'll just have to attack the ball".

"I'm glad I don't play defense". He's played a long time.

But against the Packers, the Redskins began the afternoon in shotgun formation and Smith hit tight end Jordan Reed for a seven-yard gain. During the sloppy Packers/Redskins game, Clay Matthews was called for a controversial Roughing the Passer penalty.

Redskins left tackle Trent Williams had minor knee surgery on Monday, the team's head coach Jay Gruden said. "No, I don't like the call", Blandino said.

His presence on the line opened up everyone else and was hoped to have a positive effect on Clay Matthews and the other Packers linebackers.

There were several times when loud cheers of "Go, Pack, go!" rang out in the Redskins' stadium, a week after there were boos and Washington's home sellout streak ended.

"What do you want the man to do?" said one of Smith's defensive teammates, Josh Norman.

Fabian Moreau stripped Randall Cobb with 5:25 remaining and Josh Norman recovered to secure the win. So we'll see. I mean something's got to change because the league's not.
