Bill Cosby sentenced to prison for sexual assault

Bill Cosby was sentenced to between three and 10 years in prison on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a woman, capping the once-beloved comedian's downfall from "America's Dad" to convicted felon.

Cosby's defence is pushing instead for house arrest.

Prison officials will process Cosby at the nearby state prison in Schwenksville before determining in which of Pennsylvania's 22 male prisons he will serve his sentence, prison spokeswoman Amy Worden wrote in an email. However, judges are allowed to issue sentences beyond those guidelines.

The statement was released as Judge Steven O'Neill weighed Cosby's punishment and declared him a "sexually violent predator", a legal scarlet letter that would subject the comedian to monthly counselling for the rest of his life and would require that neighbours, schools and day care centres be notified of his whereabouts. It does not impact the length of the actual sentence.

That has since been eclipsed by his conviction for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, a former administrator at his alma mater Temple University, in his Philadelphia-area home in 2004.

Cosby is 81 years old.

"Bill Cosby took my handsome, healthy young spirit and crushed it", Constand wrote.

In Constand's victim impact statement, she described how the sexual assault had a lasting effect on her.

"Given that he's 81, blind, has been convicted of a sex offense and will be supervised", it's extremely unlikely Cosby would commit another such crime, Foley testified. More than 50 other women also have accused him of sexual abuse going back decades, with most too old to prosecute.

Cosby arrived at the courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, walking with a cane and holding the arm of his spokesman Andrew Wyatt.

Cosby did not testify at the trial and has spoken publicly only infrequently since his criminal trial began.

But O'Neill said prosecutors had met their burden of proof by "clear and convincing" evidence.

The Montgomery County District Attorney, Kevin Steele, called for five to 10 years in jail for aggravated indecent assault. "The jury thinks otherwise". "He's not sorry? He's not sorry at all?" said Kathy Mckee, one of Cosby's accusers in response to the sentence on CNN.

The sentence was reduced from a maximum of 30 years.

Cosby's first trial in 2017 ended in a mistrial when jurors could not reach a verdict.

She says the Cosby team's subsequent attacks on her character left her with "insurmountable stress and anxiety".

"The behaviors are beyond their controls, so they are urged to act on it. He is likely to reoffend", Kristen Dudley, a psychologist and a member of the Pennsylvania Sexual Offenders Assessment Board, testified in court.

In a 2014 interview with ET Online, Dickinson said Cosby drugged and raped her in 1982 after dinner in Lake Tahoe.

He is also allegedly completely blind, according to defense. "After 70 years old, the risk of recidivism becomes virtually negligible".

"The victims can not be un-raped".

The sentencing came as another extraordinary #MeToo drama unfolded on Capitol Hill, where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh stands accused of sexual misconduct more than three decades ago.
