Towns' willingness to finally sign his max deal means that he nearly certainly has been assured he's never going to have to see Butler in the Wolves' locker room ever again. None of those apply for Butler's current team. "That was made clear".

Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 59 games for the Timberwolves last season.

Wojnarowski adds that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, who were both players in the trade that brought All-Star Kevin Love to Cleveland in exchange for former first overall pick Andrew Wiggins were seen talking privately at the NBA Board of Governors meeting on Friday.

During the postseason previous year, Butler's scoring average was down by almost five points per game from the 2017 NBA Playoffs with the Bulls.

Thibodeau doesn't want to trade Butler, especially in a scenario that would imperil the franchise's ability to reach the playoffs for a second straight year after missing the postseason the previous 13 seasons, league sources said.

Minnesota is unlikely to receive a hefty return for a soon-to-be free agent. The Blazers have all of their first-round picks going forward.

Further complicating matters is the fact that Butler has missed at least 15 games in four of the last five seasons - including 23 last season, many of which came after a knee injury, and subsequent surgery.

These factors, coupled with the considerable price likely necessary to extend Hollis-Jefferson, make him a practical trade candidate.

In the report, Wojnarowski mentions the Rockets along with the Nets, Pistons, Clippers, Heat and Sixers as teams that have registered interest in acquiring Butler, though whether or not Butler would be amenable to signing a long-term extension with the Rockets (or any of those other teams) will ultimately go a long way toward determining where he lands.

But according to USA Today's Jeff Zillgitt, folks may be running with those Butler-Knicks murmurs a little too much. Trading for a 29-year-old Butler and paying him $190 million until he's 34 may fall under the category of skipping steps. Those three teams - and many more around the league - could be willing to trade for Butler now under the right circumstances, league sources said.

Taylor asserting his authority in the Wolves' front office has been months in the making.
