First look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker

The first images we saw of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker in the upcoming film were underwhelming to say the least.

I've had my doubts about this project from its inception, but the video itself is promising.

A gaunt-looking Joaquin Phoenix on the set of "The Joker" filming in Manhattan's Harlem neighborhood.

The Joker's got a new look and it's eons beyond Jared Leto's hyper-modern Suicide Squad appearance.

Todd Phillips' Joker is set to be released October 4th 2019.

With the appropriately titled "Laughing" by The Guess Who playing in the background, we see a blank-faced Phoenix as Arthur, The Joker's previous alias, as revealed in Phillips' most recent post teasing the forthcoming origin film.

It is also worth mentioning that Phoenix isn't the only one in the scene with clown hair or makeup, as numerous other characters in the scene are wearing similar, albeit less elaborate outfits.

The Joker will serve as the first entry of DC's new DC Dark line of films, which will reportedly not be a part of the poorly received DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The footage doesn't show much but it does give us a look at Phoenix sporting some eerily familiar Clown makeup. The 30-second video shared by official handles of Warner Brothers and Phillips shows the actor as Arthur and towards the end of the video, the familiar haunting smile of the Joker creeps in.

Warner Bros has described the film as a story of a normal man pushed to bad - "a man disregarded by society (that's) not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale".
