Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been placed on administrative leave following fresh allegations of domestic violence by his ex-wife. There is no timetable mentioned for his return, but the statement says that, in light of the post written by Russell's estranged wife, Melissa Russell, alleging physical and mental abuse during their marriage, Major League Baseball will continuing the investigation they had left open past year when Melissa Russell's allegations first surfaced.

Melisa Russell went into detail in her blog Wednesday - claiming she was first "physically mistreated" by her husband in the months after their wedding in 2016. "Being blamed for just about anything that went wrong, name calling, intimidating me with personal force, manipulating me to think I was the problem, destroying my personal things, threatening me to "send" me & our son home to my parents as if I was privileged to be living in our home". Why did he get so angry? What did I do for him to want to put his hands on me?

Russell and the Cubs are expected to make a statement regarding Melisa's post before the start of the Crosstown Classic. Reidy later filed for divorce, and while she posted on Instagram about his infidelity, she never spoke publicly. I just thought he had let his emotions get the best of him, he loves me and he's sorry.

"No one wants to admit that there are serious problems going on in your relationship when you first get married, especially when society expects you to always portray your life to be picture ideal when you are in the public eye", the post read.

Late Thursday, a blog post attributed to Reidy contained more detailed allegations, including years of physical and emotional abuse. A friend of Reidy's added in a comment that Russell had physically abused her. I was taking back my life.

Major League Baseball caught wind of the deleted comment and opened an investigation of Russell under its then-new domestic violence protocol. After treating her like "a queen" at first, things took a turn.

The abuse continued through April 2017, Reidy-Russell said, at which point Russell "betrayed" his then-wife once again, she wrote. "I am happier than I have been in years, I've created a life for myself that is peaceful and full of unbelievable people who love and encourage me every day". The two share a 3-year-old son together.
