Fortunately for City, they are up against a Cardiff side which has failed to register a victory this season after five games. "Why should they? They ran, they fought, tried to make a comeback".

City are among the favourites to win the competition in June but Guardiola, who won lifted the trophy twice as Barcelona manager, insists his players are still getting accustomed to playing in Europe.

"When I watch them I think "thank goodness we only play them twice". The competition punishes mistakes.

"We didn't play badly".

There had previously been conflicting versions over the end date of the Argentine's agreement with the Premier League champions.

"It's always hard. Last season we did nearly everything well", he said.

"I have to find a way to be more solid because if not we won't go through".

I'd expect something similar this time, with Cardiff clattering into them in the nicest possible way and making things as hard as possible for them.

Aguero has spent the last seven years with the Premier League champions, with a return of 204 goals in 299 appearances an all-time record for the club.

"I am happy for this additional year", Aguero told CityTV. They made a few changes and looked a lot stronger when they put the regulars on in the second half. It could be the opposite. Here every game is like a final - one or two mistakes and you are out.
