Jimmy Butler requests trade from Timberwolves

Beat writer Jon Krawczynski reports in The Athletic that veteran guard and clubhouse presence Jimmy Butler has requested that he be traded less than a week before training camp is set to open.

When the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired Jimmy Butler a year ago before the season began many people speculated about how good the team could be.

The Wolves made the playoffs past year for the first time since 2004, but Butler did not attempt to hide his frustration with his younger teammates.

The Athletic first reported Butler's trade request.

But while Butler has decided he doesn't want to be in Minnesota, telling the Timberwolves this now has - at least for now - limited his options. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Butler's three choices are the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Of course, a commitment from Butler to re-sign with the team could mitigate the issue.

There have also been questions about Butler's relationship with younger teammates Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. Prior to his time in Minnesota, the four-time All-Star spent six seasons with the Bulls.

The Thibodeau-Butler meeting was expected to be a serious conversation on the franchise's fragile state, sources said.

Those questions won't stop until the season ends - or until the Timberwolves answer them with actions.
