"Kiely Rowan plc, the retail and wholesale fashion business of Orla Kiely, has ceased trading as of Monday 17 September 2018". In May, London's Fashion & Textile Museum celebrated her work, which spans two decades, in an exhibition titled "A Life in Pattern".

"'Where will I get my towels now?' was my first thought", admits Hannah Rochell, fashion editor, founder of the website En Brogue and Kiely afficianado who, like thousands of others, immediately shared her shock on social media.

Orla Kiely, the brand known for its 1970s-inspired prints, has closed its stores and website in the United Kingdom and Ireland after its parent company, Kiely Rowan, called in administrators. It goes on to say, "Thank you for embracing our brand and designs throughout the years, and for your ongoing support". Orla, Dermott and the Team'.

However, Orla Kiely Home and Design-branded accessories and homeware will continue to be sold through distribution partners.

There has been an outpouring of messages for Orla Kiely since the news broke early this morning.

Orla announced that she has closed both her online and retail businesses in Kildare and London and the £8 million brand's stores in Chelsea, Covent Garden and New York City have also been shut down. "All your fellow entrepreneurs are thinking of you during this hard time", one Twitter user said.

Another said: 'Sad to hear that Orla Kiely has ceased trading.

A third tweeted, "Got a present of one of her baby-changing bags back in the day, so fond associations".

Kiely, an Irish designer, set up her own label in the 1990s and has gained widespread recognition for her distinctive prints.

And we all remember her sister Pippa Middleton's gorgeous Orla Kiely white blouse from her honeymoon in 2017.
